Euthanasia Certification Training
The mission and purpose of the North Carolina Animal Federation is to advance leadership through collaboration, professional development, legislative participation and education for animal organizations in North Carolina.

North Carolina general statute 02 NCAC 52J .0402 states: Only a Certified Euthanasia Technician, Probationary Euthanasia Technician, or a veterinarian licensed to practice veterinary medicine in North Carolina may euthanize an animal in a certified animal shelter. To review the code, go to http://www.agr.state.nc.us/vet

The NCAF offers CET training for animal shelter employees in North Carolina. In addition to our yearly training, we can also provide training at your facility for your staff only. This allows us to focus the class on the specific needs of your shelter. NCAF can also provide an informal evaluation of your shelters euthanasia protocol.

C.E.T Training Goals
  • Certified Euthanasia Technicians (CETs) must consistently demonstrate an ability and desire to handle animals in such a manner as to prevent, to the greatest extent possible, feelings of pain, fear and stress.
  • Address issues of compassion fatigue and anxiety associated with the euthanasia process.
  • Meet the Department of Agriculture’s requirements for certification.
  • To challenge ourselves daily to create a compassionate and team oriented environment to combat the stressful nature of our jobs as CET’s.
  • To increase our understanding of animals and ourselves.
  • Staff involved with the euthanasia process must allow nothing to interfere. Staff will give their full attention to each animal until the procedure is completed.
Basic Fees:
  • $150 per person attending training
  • $110 for NCAF members
  • Additional fees for materials may be necessary
How to run a successful volunteer program

Volunteers can and should be an asset to every animal shelter or animal services organization. Learn the best ways to recruit and screen potential volunteers. You will have the opportunity to see example applications, waivers and training manuals. Learn about holding orientations, how to best train volunteers and what you should expect from volunteers. We will discuss quality versus quantity in a successful program. The challenges of volunteer management as well as common issues that arise will be discussed as well as getting staff and volunteers to work well together. Scheduling and job descriptions will also be addressed.

Simon Woodrup has managed the volunteer program at the APS of Durham for five years and has gladly provided assistance to other animal organizations wanting to set up a volunteer program. This program is intended for anyone thinking of setting up a volunteer program or currently struggling with volunteer issues.
